just want to add some tips:

    - be pattient, hold your breath when shutter press... to have great focus on your photo
    - keep away from kids arround the tank, sometimes kids are annoying
    - golden hour to take a shoot are 8 am - 11am and/or 14pm - 17pm: which means you can have best contrast arround that hour
Thank you sir ! Will add that to my side notes.

it depends of lens used and what size of your Koi.

for example the koi is 60BU and you have 50mm lens, look at the view finder... imagine the framing about 1/3 of frame. with 50mm lens is about 80cm or 100cm from fish (assume it use full frame camera )

about the water height? as long as the fish feels comfort is fine

I like the general tips of mr.waterkeeper, and really apreciate mr.rizal61's technical advices.
Golden moments not only give you the right colour but also prevent unnecessary reflection.
Any camera is good for your reference, but if you want to show the best of your Jewel ....
use a decent camera (not necessarily expensive, but the one with a good lense will do).
If the picture taking is only once for a while, just borrow the better camera from your friends
(if you are not own it). But if you own a lot of lovely fish and want to do many many pictures
of them, why not invest on a good camera too (just the cost of one average gosanke Koi).
    Happy framing !!!
